Lounges & Social Cannabis Spaces in Portland

Members-only lounges serving "blunch" (blunt + brunch), a downtown dispensary with an upstairs social lounge, pool tables and arcade machines — Portland is building the social cannabis scene from the ground up.

The State of Social Cannabis in Portland

Oregon hasn't yet passed statewide legislation for licensed cannabis consumption lounges. The OCCC Initiative Petition 39 — which would have created a regulatory framework for licensed cannabis cafes — was withdrawn in a "strategic pause." But a separate 2026 ballot initiative to establish licensed consumption cafes is advancing and could go before voters this fall.

In the meantime, Portland's cannabis community has done what Portland always does: built something anyway. Through creative use of existing law, several BYOC (Bring Your Own Cannabis) social spaces operate as private membership clubs, sidestepping the lack of a formal lounge licensing framework. These aren't technically "dispensaries that let you smoke" — they're private clubs where members happen to consume cannabis together.

BYOC = Bring Your Own Cannabis

Portland's social cannabis spaces operate as private membership clubs. They don't sell cannabis — you bring your own. Most provide accessories (pipes, vaporizers, rolling papers). Membership fees are typically nominal. Purchase cannabis at a nearby dispensary before visiting.

Portland's Social Cannabis Spaces

Flight Lounge

5944 NE Sandy Blvd — Co-founded by Leia Flynn and Joshua Young, Flight Lounge is Portland's most established social cannabis space and the closest thing the city has to an Amsterdam-style coffee shop. It operates as a members-only club with remarkably low barriers to entry:

  • $20 lifetime membership (general public)
  • $10 lifetime membership (cannabis industry workers)
  • BYOC — the lounge provides accessories, glassware, and a comfortable consumption environment

What sets Flight Lounge apart is "blunch" — their signature blunt + brunch service. Yes, they serve actual brunch food alongside your cannabis consumption. Eggs, waffles, coffee, and a joint: that's a Portland Saturday morning.

Flight has expanded to a second location in Oregon City, suggesting the model is sustainable and the demand is real. The NE Sandy location has a warm, living-room-like atmosphere — couches, art, good lighting — that makes first-timers feel immediately comfortable.

Visiting Flight Lounge

Stop at a dispensary on NE Sandy Blvd before heading to Flight — there are several within walking distance. Bring cash for your membership fee and for brunch. The vibe is casual and welcoming. Tell staff it's your first time and they'll walk you through everything.

Broadway Cannabis Market & Social Lounge

219 SW Broadway — This is Portland's most visitor-friendly cannabis social experience because it combines dispensary and lounge in one building. Broadway Cannabis Market operates a full OLCC-licensed dispensary on the ground floor and a second-story social lounge above it.

  • Buy cannabis downstairs, consume upstairs
  • Equipment rentals available: Stündenglass gravity bong, Puffco Peak, Volcano vaporizer — premium devices you can try without buying
  • Downtown location makes it easily accessible for visitors staying in the Pearl District or city center

The equipment rental program is a standout feature. Visitors who don't travel with accessories can try high-end devices like the Stündenglass (a $600 gravity bong that looks like a scientific instrument) or the Volcano (the gold standard of desktop vaporizers) without any commitment. It's a dispensary visit and a consumption experience in one stop.

NW Cannabis Club

Located on SE Powell Blvd, the NW Cannabis Club is Portland's most recreational social cannabis space — emphasis on the "social." The club features:

  • Pool tables and arcade machines
  • Live music events
  • BYOC format with a bar-like atmosphere
  • Regular events and themed nights

If Flight Lounge is the cannabis brunch spot, NW Cannabis Club is the cannabis dive bar — in the best possible Portland way. The atmosphere is loose, friendly, and unpretentious. It's where you go to play pool, listen to local bands, and share a joint with strangers who become friends.

The Future: Licensed Cannabis Cafes

Portland's BYOC model works, but it has limitations. Without a formal licensing framework, these spaces can't sell cannabis on-site (except Broadway's unique dispensary + lounge model), can't serve cannabis-infused food, and operate in a legal gray area.

That could change soon. A 2026 ballot initiative to create a licensing framework for cannabis consumption cafes in Oregon is currently advancing. If it passes, Portland would likely become ground zero for licensed cannabis cafes — imagine the Flight Lounge model, but with on-site sales, infused food menus, and full regulatory backing.

The original OCCC Initiative Petition 39 was withdrawn in what organizers called a "strategic pause" to refine the language and build broader coalition support. The current 2026 initiative represents that refinement. Given Portland's culture, its existing social consumption infrastructure, and Oregon's generally progressive cannabis policy, passage would surprise no one.

Oregon is among several states considering licensed cannabis consumption venues. Portland's existing BYOC clubs demonstrate consumer demand for social consumption spaces.

Tips for Visiting Social Cannabis Spaces

  • Bring valid 21+ ID. All spaces check identification at the door.
  • Bring your own cannabis. Purchase from a nearby dispensary before visiting (except Broadway, where you can buy downstairs).
  • Bring cash. Membership fees and food/drinks are typically cash-only or cash-preferred.
  • Be respectful of shared space. These are communal environments. Don't blow smoke in people's faces, don't hog the equipment, and be friendly.
  • Start slow if you're new. The social setting makes it easy to consume more than intended. Pace yourself.
  • Plan your transport home. Don't drive impaired. Use TriMet, Uber, or Lyft.
